Thank you for visiting our site. We specialize in building new furniture, repairing and refinishing old furniture, and creating custom furniture in your choice of woods.
At Schanz Furniture we have built a reputation for high-quality, hand made furniture, and a beautiful hand-rubbed finish. We welcome you to visit our shop in person near the historic village of South Amana, Iowa. Learn more about our history "The Schanz Tradition" and what sets us apart from other furniture shops "The Schanz Difference."
We have many original designs to choose from and a large selection of items for sale in our brochure. Contact us to request a brochure.  Schanz furniture is constructed using solid hardwoods and time tested joinery of mortise and tenon and dovetails.  Standard construction features include panel sides and doors, dovetail drawers on all four corners, and flush-fit drawers and doors, giving our furniture a very clean and simple look.
Bring us a picture or a rough sketch and we will custom-build exactly what you want in your choice of woods. If you need help with a design, we would be happy to make suggestions. If you're not exactly sure what you want, take a look at our standard designs, which can be changed and customized. Options are endless.
Bring us your family heirloom or that antique you’ve been waiting to fix or hand down and we will restore it. Whether it's restoring just one piece of furniture or an array of pieces from Iowa’s Old Capitol in Iowa City, we've done it.

We take great effort to restore each piece to as close to original as possible, but still usable and functional. We start by hand-stripping each piece (no dipping) with a chemical stripper that removes old finish and paint. If possible, each piece is then completely taken apart and reconstructed. In most cases reconstructing involves repairing the piece to better than it was originally made, by using screws and dowels instead of nails. While the furniture is unassembled, it's completely pre-sanded in preparation for staining and finishing. Any needed repairs, like adding missing parts, carvings, or turnings, will be completed with wood that matches the original as closely as possible.

Now your furniture is ready for our hand-rubbed varnish finish. To learn more about our finishing process, see "The Schanz Difference."
Chair caning and other seat weaving is a special service we offer. Cane seats usually have drilled holes to hold the cane or a groove around the seat frame known as pressed cane. We use only real bamboo cane, not plastic, and have several patterns to choose from, the most common being the Regular 7-Step Pattern. Please see the patterns below.
Cane Patterns
Regular 7-Step Pattern: The cost for hole caning is $1.10 per hole, counting all the drilled holes around the seat. The cost for pressed sheet cane is $5 per front inch, measuring across the front of the seat, plus a $15 flat fee to remove the old spline.
Star Pattern: This pattern is for seats that have drilled holes only. The cost is $1.30 per hole.
Spider Pattern: This pattern is for seats that have drilled holes only. The cost is $1.30 per hole.
Weaving Materials and Patterns
Brown Rush: Woven with fiber rush. The cost is $6 per front inch, measuring across the front of the seat.
Splint Ash: Woven with natural splint ash. The cost is $6.50 per front inch.
Herringbone Pattern Cane: Woven using natural bamboo cane in a variety of sizes. The cost is $11 per front inch.
“B” Pattern Cane: Woven using natural bamboo cane. The cost is $6.50 per front inch.
